"Why the hell would you want to go to Russia anyway?" asked Chris, a 6'2", red-headed high-school drop out and former circus roadie my sister and I had met in Times Square only a month before.

"I'm a Russian language major. It kind of goes with the territory," I told him, taking a sip of the black coffee I'd ordered from the barista at the Barnes and Noble cafe.

Freezer Burn Russia is white.
Its pale, cold arms embrace,
constrict my chest.
I exhale in a rush of heat and wet.

My breath is white.
It streams from my lips,
February steam, curls and curves above me.
Smoke folds the city in a choke hold,
circles the heads of the shivering people.

The snow is white.
Pressed, compressed; the ice is thick.
The air burns cold in my throat, my lungs.
I freeze.

My cheeks are pink. My eyes are wet.

First of all, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Festivus. Whatever you celebrate, Happy Happy! And a Happy New Year, too.

Secondly, I realized that while I was busy with exams and work and holidays, I completely missed my 6th dA anniversary. I haven't been as active in the last couple of years as I was at the start. But I have always felt very blessed to have this community as part of my life. I've made some friendships here that have lasted these 6 years and that will last me the rest of my life. And even those relationships which have faded have had a lasting impact on me.

So thanks, you lot, for being your magnificent selves. I'm privileged to know you.
